Ash Wednesday is a day of fasting and abstinence.

What is the Lenten fast? Fasting consists of a single meal during the day, with frugal eating in the morning and evening. Nothing is to be eaten between meals. If one eats a meal at midday, one only takes a light snack in the evening.

People over 60 years of age, young people under 18 years of age and pregnant women are exempt from fasting.

What is abstinence? The law of abstinence forbids eating meat and meat juices, as well as the blood, fat, and marrow of animals. It does not forbid eggs, dairy products (milk, cream, butter, cheese), oleo margarine, condiments and seasonings, even if they come from animal fat.

All the faithful who have completed fourteen years of age (traditionally from seven years of age) and the use of reason are bound by the law of abstinence.
